It’s been wonderful to see the same system we use on Wall Street serving kids in poor neighborhoods. But it’s also been hard. These students and teachers face unique challenges.
The Cape Town teachers are overburdened, with scant resources. And the students face many challenges, including violence in their suburbs. So the schools have struggled to use our help.
We came to realize that the way we teach - not what we teach - had to be customized to have the impact we want.
So we’ve adapted and learned.
In our next phase we are using Uber to send paid teaching interns to schools where they lead intensive Color Accounting camps. The results are proving outstanding.
The pressure is taken off the teachers, the kids love it, and the interns gain valuable teaching experience. In many cases it's the first time in their life that they've been paid as professionals.
And we get to say that we too are life-long learners.
